Creative Challenge 3
I chose to portray my grandmother
Design options:
Organically formed background and sketch (acrylic pour and a loose sketch)
Organically formed background and portrait (only acrylic pours make up the imagery)
- Background and foreground interact with one another/ half rendering
Materiality options
- Acrylic paint
- Soft pastels
Personality characteristics:
Perceptive
Strong-willed
For my final piece, I decided to have the background and figure interacting with each other. The best way for me to do this was by using soft pastels. The bright, bold colors as well as the heavy, textured line weight, play into the idea that the person portrayed is strong-willed. The opacity of the pastels is to portray perceptive qualities. The varying levels of opacity help the figure blend in with the background. This is to imply being insightful by interpreting sensory information (the environment), to the extent that it is a part of them. I would also say that religion plays a large role in her identity, (she is a minister) so the strong lighting is used to portray her spiritual outlook on the world.
