creative problem 2
For this creative challenge, I chose a piece in my home that I find to be both disconcerting and alluring. The art piece is a statue that I bought for five dollars at a senior center garage sale last year. The man who sold it was elated that someone found it as endearingly kitsch as he did. When I bought it, I was fascinated with how the eyes are painted. They are painted so that there is not a single point in space where the cat is looking at you. Rather, it is always looking beyond you. This statue gives me a great deal of joy; however, I have still found that, after having it in my home for a while, I tend to forget about it. Perhaps, having a drawing of it in my home will help me to pay better attention to it. When deciding how to draw this, I considered what it was about it that is so alluring to me. Of course, as I mentioned, it's the eyes. The way in which the cat looks beyond the viewer leads me to feel that not only is it kingly, as the crown suggests, but perhaps godly. I find the idea that this cat feels godly to be hilarious, so I chose to highlight that. Using a characteristic of iconography, which is the faint halo that usually glows behind, I implied that the cat is, indeed, holy.
