Creative Challenge Three

A portrait of Betty the bulldog, painted by my friend Harris Johnson

The Potential of Portraiture to Bring Us Closer

Create a portrait of a person or animal that you miss seeing in person. This should be someone you have not been able to visit due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Brainstorm a list of qualities you would like your portrait to convey about your subject. Materials and sizes are completely open; you can create a drawing, painting, photograph, collage, or sculpture. Let your subject's personality influence your choice of materials, size, and artistic style. Be sure to consider elements such as color, value, texture, line quality, or brush strokes. For example, you could paint your subject on a two-by-two inch canvas and thin line work in order to convey how quiet they are or you could use gesso on a large piece of cardboard and use fluorescent spray paint to convey their big personality.

Consider what you use as a reference for your portrait; Will you use a direct source such as a picture, video or live video call, or will you use an indirect source such as your memory, or the memory of others? It can be a combination of many sources.
